The Daily Grind

We’re always asked what makes our coffee so rich and unique and we thought it was about time we spill the beans...

Certified and award winning

Iron and Fire harness a unique roasting process, combining their founder Kev’s passion for coffee and background in engineering. From this came Columbian Jazz, with its ‘rich chocolate and caramel notes and a pleasant cherry finish’

Guilt - free coffee

Many Iron and Fire blends are Rainforest Alliance and Organically certified and those which aren't are selected from independent farms- directly supporting producers.

Made with a whole latte love

Our coffee is freshly ground to order, and our baristas are trained to bring the best out of each and every bean.

Where it all began

Coffee traces back centuries to ancient forests in Ethiopia where, legend has it, a goat herder first noticed the precious beans. According to the legend, the goat herder noticed that his goats became more energetic after eating certain berries and relayed this to his local monastery.

Eventually, more caught wind of the goat herder's discovery and the process we use to this day began to be carefully refined. European travellers brought back tales of a dark, exotic beverage which quickly became popular across the continent.

Despite its popularity, coffee became particularly controversial, with many considering it a Satanic invention, and the Pope had to intervene. Upon tyring the beverage for himself, the Pope enjoyed the drink so much that he immediately gave it papal approval.

Coffee houses quickly become social hubs in which like-minded artisans could engage in conversation with each other and we- at The Tile Press- seek to revive this. Embedded in a community of local artists and makers, The Tile Press takes great coffee back to its roots and embraces coffee drinking the good old fashioned way.

 Now it’s your turn!

We may be closed on Mondays now summer is over but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a good coffee. We believe that great coffee can be made anywhere. Here’s some of our top tips to perfect your coffee game in the comfort of your own home...

  1. Preheat your mug

This is one of our favourite hacks as it requires little to no equipment and makes a huge difference to your cup of Joe. Briefly filling your mug with boiling water before making your coffee ensures you get maximum flavour, and your drink stays hotter for longer.

2. Choose the right roast level for you

Roast level has a huge impact on your coffee-drinking experience so it’s important that you find the right roast for you and it’s a lot simpler than you’d think. If you don’t know where to start, just take a look at our helpful guide

Light Roast

Bright citrus flavour with high acidity and fruity smell

  • Brings out certain notes which are masked in darker roasts

  • Has less body than medium/ dark roasted coffee and is therefore not recommended if you prefer your coffee black

  • Generally found in breakfast blends

Medium Roast

Slightly sweet, balanced taste with lots of body

  • Has the perfect balance of complexity and depth

  • The most commonly used household roast

Dark roast

Strong and bold with a bitter caramel flavour

  • Smoky and earthy notes

  • Perfect for black coffee lovers

  • Rich in antioxidants

3. Perfect your coffee to water ratio

The SCA Golden cup standard recommend 55 grams of coffee per litre of water however you do not need specialist measuring equipment for this! In fact, we find that roughly 1 tablespoon of coffee per 100ml of water works best if you like it strong or ¾ of a tablespoon if you prefer a more subtle taste. We recommend you tweak this ratio to find what works for you.

Now, I’m going to go grab myself a coffee :)
